Senator Lindsey Graham Passes Away at 71 After Brief Illness

July 12, 2026

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham has died at the age of 71 following a brief and sudden illness, his office confirmed Sunday morning.

The Republican senator passed away on the evening of Saturday, July 11, according to an official statement posted on X.

“On the evening of Saturday, July 11, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham passed away from a brief and sudden illness. Senator Graham’s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period,” the statement read.

A specific cause of death has not yet been disclosed.

A Return from Ukraine

Graham had just returned to the United States from a trip to Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelensky on July 10 to discuss the ongoing war against Russia. The meeting was part of Graham’s continued efforts to support U.S. aid and strategic involvement in the region.

A Distinguished Career

The Seneca, South Carolina native had represented the Palmetto State in the U.S. Senate since 2003, taking over the seat previously held by the legendary Strom Thurmond, who served until age 100.

Over his four terms in the Senate, Graham held key leadership positions, including Chairman of the Senate Budget Committee. Before his Senate tenure, he represented South Carolina’s third congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1995 to 2003.

Military Service

Graham also served his country in uniform, working as an active duty lawyer in the U.S. Air Force. He retired in 2015 as a colonel with the Air Force Reserves, capping a distinguished military legal career that spanned decades.

Tributes Pour In

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster released an emotional statement mourning the loss of his longtime friend and colleague:

“Peggy and I—and our children—are devastated. Lindsey Graham is irreplaceable. The fiercest of fighters for South Carolina and America—and a loyal and steadfast friend. We grieve with Darline, his family and his devoted staff. May God hold him gently in the palm of his hand. We shall not see his likes again.”

A Staunch Ally of President Trump

Throughout his Senate career, Graham was known as a steadfast ally and close confidant of President Trump. The two frequently appeared together at campaign events, including a notable appearance at the South Carolina Statehouse in January 2023, where Graham spoke alongside the President.

What Comes Next

Under South Carolina law, Governor McMaster will appoint a replacement to fill Graham’s Senate seat until a special election can be held. The timing of that election will be determined by state officials in the coming days.

Graham is survived by his family, including his sister Darline, who was mentioned in Governor McMaster’s tribute.
