The investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, has taken a significant turn. New information suggests the masked suspect believed to be responsible for her abduction may have cased the home weeks before she went missing.
According to details obtained from sources close to the investigation, the individual depicted in the FBI-released image standing at Nancy Guthrie’s front door was actually captured by her Nest doorbell camera on a date prior to the night of the suspected abduction on February 1. In this earlier image, the suspect is notably not carrying the backpack seen in later footage.
This revelation paints a more complex picture of the events leading up to the disappearance. One theory being explored by investigators is that during this first approach, the suspect noticed the doorbell camera and was scared off. He allegedly returned on the morning of February 1, this time seen tampering with the device and placing branches in front of the lens to obscure its view. These later images, showing the suspect with a backpack, are the ones the FBI has previously stated were taken on the morning Nancy Guthrie vanished after failing to log into a virtual church service.
This new timeline helps explain why authorities have been canvassing the neighborhood, asking residents to review their own security footage for any suspicious activity dating all the way back to January 1st. The search for a potential pattern of surveillance is now a key focus.
Jason Pack, a former FBI agent, commented on the significance of this development. He noted that if the individual in both sets of images is the same person, it strongly suggests a level of planning and preparation. “The fact that there was preparation and planning… makes it more of a sophisticated type of criminal activity than someone just showing up,” Pack explained.
The doorbell camera images remain the most crucial pieces of evidence in the case, which has captured national attention for much of the past month. Despite these leads, no official suspect has been identified, and the investigation, while facing potential resource challenges, continues as authorities work to trace the individual’s movements and identity.
