In a story that has left many in disbelief, a 31-year-old man from Newcastle, England, has been sentenced to three years in prison for permanently tattooing three young children. The man, Patrick Coe, reportedly believed the tattoos he was giving the kids were temporary—a claim a judge has since described as not just false, but “staggeringly stupid.”
A “Harmful” Mistake with Lasting Consequences
According to reports, Coe used a home tattoo kit to ink the children, leaving them in pain and with permanent markings. The victims, whose exact ages have not been released, were so distressed by the ordeal that they required hospital visits, medical tests, and are now in need of therapy.
During the sentencing at Newcastle Crown Court, Judge Sarah Mallett did not hold back. “The children complained of being in pain while Coe was tattooing them, and his claim that the small designs would fade had proved to be false,” she stated. She went on to call his actions “staggeringly stupid and foolish” as well as “very harmful.”
Coe pleaded guilty to three counts of child cruelty. The court heard that one of the victims suffered a minor infection, while the others experienced “significant anxiety and distress” and are now “upset and scared.” In a particularly poignant moment, the judge addressed the lifelong impact of Coe’s actions, saying, “The children didn’t choose to have a permanent tattoo… They are visibly marked with a permanent reminder of you and this.”
The Aftermath and a “Stupid” Excuse
When first confronted, Coe reportedly said he “didn’t see anything wrong” with what he had done. His attorney, Brian Hegarty, later argued that Coe did not intend to cause pain and has since realized his actions were “incredibly stupid.”
Beyond the emotional trauma, the children had to undergo preventative antibiotic treatments for hepatitis B and tetanus due to the risk of infection from the unsanitary home procedure.
In addition to the prison sentence, Coe was issued a ten-year restraining order.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of unlicensed tattooing and the serious legal and emotional consequences of such “staggeringly stupid” decisions. While Coe may have believed the ink was temporary, the trauma for these young victims is, unfortunately, permanent
