The entertainment world and the Short family are mourning a profound and heartbreaking loss. Katherine Short, the daughter of beloved comedian and actor Martin Short, has passed away at the age of 42.
The Short family confirmed the tragic news exclusively to PEOPLE, releasing a statement that speaks to their immense grief.
“It is with profound grief that we confirm the passing of Katherine Hartley Short. The Short family is devastated by this loss and asks for privacy at this time. Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world,” the family shared.
According to the Los Angeles coroner, Katherine died by suicide. Emergency services, including the Los Angeles Fire Department, responded to a call from a Hollywood Hills home on the evening of Monday, Feb. 23.
A Life Dedicated to Helping Others
While Katherine largely stayed out of the Hollywood spotlight that often surrounded her famous father, she led a life of profound purpose and service. She was a licensed clinical social worker, working in private practice and dedicating her career to supporting others. At the time of her passing, she also worked part-time at Amae Health, a clinic where she provided community outreach, family support groups, peer support, and psychotherapy.
Her academic path reflects this deep commitment to understanding and helping people. Katherine earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and gender sexuality studies from New York University in 2006, followed by a master’s in social work from the University of Southern California in 2010.
A Cherished Member of the Short Family
Katherine was adopted by Martin Short and his late wife, Nancy Dolman, during their 30-year marriage. Nancy, a talented comedian and singer, passed away from ovarian cancer in 2010. Katherine is survived by her father and her two brothers, also adopted, Oliver Patrick, 39, and Henry Hayter, 36.
Though she preferred a life away from the flashbulbs, Katherine was occasionally seen supporting her father at red carpet events, including the afterparty for The Producers in 2003 and the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in 2011. These rare public appearances offered glimpses of a close-knit family, one that has now been struck by an unthinkable tragedy.
A Note on Mental Health
Katherine Short’s death is a stark and painful reminder that mental health struggles can affect anyone, regardless of their background, profession, or the love that surrounds them. It also highlights the immense pain that can exist even within those who have dedicated their lives to healing others.
Our hearts go out to Martin Short, his family, and all who knew and loved Katherine. In the face of such a devastating loss, respecting their request for privacy is paramount. May her memory be a blessing, and may her family find strength and solace in the “light and joy” she brought to their lives.
