It is with heavy hearts that we share the devastating news of the passing of rising rap star Lil Poppa. The Jacksonville-born artist, whose real name was Janarious Mykel Wheeler, has died at the age of 25.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office in Georgia confirmed his death to multiple outlets, including News4Jax and The Independent. According to reports, the young musician passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 18. At this time, a cause of death has not been released.
“His manner and cause of death are pending investigation,” Senior Medical Examiner Investigator Brian Jost Reents stated in an email.
A Final Release Just Days Ago
The tragedy is made even more poignant by the fact that Poppa had just shared new music with the world. On Feb. 13, he dropped his latest song, “Out of Town Bae,” which was featured in his final post on Instagram.
The rapper, who was signed to Yo Gotti’s Collective Music Group (CMG), was riding a wave of momentum. He had released his latest album, Almost Normal Again, this past August and was scheduled to perform in New Orleans next month. Known for introspective and emotionally raw tracks like “Love & War” and “Mind Over Matter,” he had carved out a dedicated fanbase that connected deeply with his vulnerability.
“The Power to Change Someone’s Outlook”
In a 2021 interview with Audiomack, Lil Poppa reflected on the connection he had with his fans, many of whom told him his music helped them through difficult times.
“That means a lot,” he said at the time. “That makes me realize I got the power to change someone’s outlook on a certain situation. So I need to be mature enough to handle my own situations in a mature way.”
That sentiment has been echoed in the outpouring of grief following the news of his death.
Fans Mourn: “They Only Love You When You’re Gone”
In the hours following the announcement, fans flooded the comments section of his final Instagram post. The reaction was a mix of shock, sorrow, and a pointed observation about how the world often recognizes talent only after it’s gone.
Many noticed his follower count surged past the 1 million mark after his death was reported. Comments included:
